Hospitals pay huge locum bill for unfilled jobs – July 2017
Report: Annual Taking the Temperature Report 2016/2017
Nine in ten locums are now hired to cover unfilled permanent posts, according to figures that suggest the NHS is struggling to attract doctors without paying a premium.
There has been a 30 per cent rise in the proportion of locums used to cover staff vacancies in the past two years.
Radiologists who interpret scans are now the best paid locums, averaging £105 an hour, and a “persistent and dangerous shortage” means patients face long delays in getting test results.
